I know that nothing is what it seems I know talk doesn’t mean a thing I knew tears most every night ‘Cause I love you, and that’s alright I’ll admit that I’m afraid That one day you’ll walk away But I can’t live another way ‘Cause I love you, and that’s okay I loved you from the first time I saw you for the first time loving me Like I love you So tonight before you sleep Search your heart, you may find me Listen close to what I say ‘Cause I love you and that’s okay I loved you from the first time I saw you for the first time loving me Like I love you

Love You Now 04:38
Love You Now Hey – last night I had that dream Where you are far across the sea Still, still I called your name Above the crashing waves But you turned away Did you ever have that dream Where you are walking by the sea Then above the crashing waves Suddenly a voice Here’s what that voice says If I love you now, And you are far away Would you come to me, would you stay I can never tell where I stand with you I wonder what I’d lose if you knew I love you now I have waited so long To whisper lover’s songs in your ear Hey -- I’m tired of these old dreams I’m tired of waking up with me I’m tired of putting on a show When I call your name I want you to know That I love you, now If you’re far away You should come to me, you should stay I can never tell Where I stand with you Now it’s up to you ‘cause you know I love you now

Voice of the Night Sometimes at night, way up in Wisconsin That’s when true love shows its hand Wine on my shirt, fog at the window Still looking for my long lost friend Voice of the night, tell me that I’ll find him Tell me that that I’ll find my long lost friend Cause sometimes at night, way out in Wisconsin I’m not so sure the sun will come again Sometimes at night, out in Virginia That’s when the years show their hand All my dreams, lying dead beside me All my hopes turned into sand Voice of the night, tell me that I’ll find him Tell me that I’ll find my long lost friend Cause sometimes at night, out in Virginia I’m not so sure the sun will come again Sometimes at night, driving through Montana That’s when my memories show their hand Thinking of you and how you left so sudden For reasons I’ll never understand

One of us is lying I know that it's not me One of us is crying Who could that poor fool be? I should have seen this coming My dreams always fall through One of us is leaving It might as well be you Just one of us is lying Just one of us still dreams So would you say 'I love you' And lie once more to me I wish that I could tell you I wanted to be free I wish that when I kissed you It didn't mean a thing I wish when I first met you I knew you'd be untrue But that would all be lying And I'm crying cause we're through
5.
MY BEAUTIFUL FRIEND Hello, my beautiful friend Heard you’ve got sad times again Tears don’t become you, I know they try Troubles never listen to a lullaby So I thought I’d call my beautiful friend Let you know I’m thinking again Of all that you give me, I still can’t explain How you keep making rainbows out of nothing but rain How can I tell you what you mean to me I’m not some kind of poet with a grand soliloquy You’ve got beauty nothing can touch And you’ve got a friend who loves you So much, my beautiful friend One day the sad days will end Till that happens I want you to know The world got much sweeter And my life is better Since I met my beautiful friend My beautiful friend

Got your letter today You didn't have much to say You don't like being so far away You were always that way I've been alone for days The sun has lost its rays You tell me that's the price we must pay You were always that way And I love you more each day Every night I think of you Out on the road in some empty room I still love you I still love you please Come back to me Got your letter today Before I put it away I saw a tear stain down by your name You were always that way And I love you more each day
7.
I never walked the narrow path I liked the wide one more I'll never know how my crooked road Could lead me to your door When I cried out for you You were there for me I've never known angels I've only known strangers With heartbreak up their sleeves My life's been random but you had to happen That's what I believe I never knew a word of love Could go straight to your heart I never know a happy day when we are far apart And every time I call you You're always there for me I've never known angels I've only known strangers With heartbreak up their sleeves My life's been random but you had to happen That's what I believe I'll never know how my crooked road Could lead me to your door And every time I call you You're always there for me I've never known angels I've only known strangers With heartbreak up their sleeves My life's been random but you had to happen That's what I believe

Time Goes Rushing By Time goes rushing by There ain’t no use to cry ‘Cept sometimes at night when I think of you And time rushing by Once upon a time, when you were by my side I never realized that time goes rushing by Do you still love me I know you do I know you know There’s no me without you Maybe one day, you’ll wake up and say It shouldn’t be this way cause time goes rushing by Maybe today, you’ll wake up and say I’m coming home to stay cause time is rushing by Cause time is rushing by

Straight For You Here I am, once again falling off that cliff again Falling straight for you Once again, wondering how this will end This time will our dream come true? We’ve both been here before We both said no more But here I am -- Falling straight for you I never knew a man like you The things you do to my heart I can’t understand You told me it was fine If I decline but I know I’m in love again Our love always turns, we can’t live and learn So here I am once again falling straight for you We’ve had sweet dreams -- We’ve had sad scenes We know love’s not fair Sometimes I see -- You beside me Falling through thin air So here I am, falling straight for you

Run Away 03:54
I know you want me to leave with you That's what you say Get inside that car of yours Both of us just run away Don't look back don't have to wonder what might have been Never be all alone never have to cry again Run away, you say both of us should run away Here's my heart here's my hand Why don't you lead the way All alone in a boat far out on the midnight sea You said there was no one else in this world for you but me Close your eyes dream a dream of a place so far away That's the place you told me we would both live some day Run away, you say both of us should run away Here's my heart here's my hand Why don't you lead the way Let's pretend for tonight that you meant what you said to me All alone in that boat out so far on that midnight sea Let's pretend one more time that your words of love were true One more time then I swear I will run away from you

Endless mercies, endless sky One perfect Man brought here to die Crowned with glory, crowned with thorns So this is the reason you Lord were born? When the soldiers seized you was Your brave heart still? Did your faith falter when Pilate smiled and went for the kill? I will follow You still To the top of Calvary hill Child of Lilies, Child of Light What do You see from that bloody height? Soldiers mocking, women cry Two dying thieves hang by Your side Do You see mercy in anyone’s eyes? Do You see angels waiting for You up in the sky? Does God hear Your cries? Tell me please -- Does God hear Your cries? Do You see Judas, who hangs from a tree? Do You see Peter, who now hides from Thee? Do You see Pilate, still washing his hands? Do You see Herod, now the happiest man? Do You see Mary, with tears in her eyes? Do You hear elders still spreading their lies? Do You hear thunder, do You feel rain? Is Your Father with You in Your hour of pain? Can You see ages still yet to come? Can You hear voices crying “What have we done”? Can You see horrors all done in Your name? Do You see all – do You still feel the same? Tell me please, do You feel the same? Tell me please -- Would You do it again? Tell me please -- Would You do it again? Maybe it’s a miracle Maybe there are things You see Maybe it’s a miracle Something that was meant to be Maybe when You look down Maybe You see endlessly Maybe You see miracles Stretching to eternity Maybe You see mercies Falling like Golgotha rain Maybe You hear children Through the ages call Your name Maybe when You look down You can see across the years Maybe when You look down You can see me standing here Child of Lilies – what do You see? When You look across the years When You see through all the tears Maybe one miracle -- is me

Moonshine 04:17
Moonshine I saw the moon wink when you said you loved me It was such an easy warning sign to see Your sweet words made me high then I looked up in the sky That's when the full moon winked down at me I guess the moon had heard your lies before He must have known the pain that lay in store For anyone who heard your lies when the moon was in their eyes But I sailed straight for heartbreak's rocky shore Moonshine, moonshine I guess the moon knows all your midnight lies But the moon could never warn All the fools who have been born To fall in love when the moon shines in their eyes Looking back it's clear as clear can be The moon was feeling awful sad for me I must have been a sight, one more love struck fool that night So he winked but I was too far gone to see

about

This is the second compilation of Dave Shiflett songs for female vocalists. Two vocalists are featured: Jeanine Guidry, who appeared on Siren Songs Part One, and Kathie Thomas. Buttafly Vazquez sings harmony on two of the songs.

Jeanine sings "Love You Now," "My Beautiful Friend," "That's What I Believe," "Straight For You" and "Maybe It's A Miracle."

"Love You Now" was from a recording session at Slipped Disc studio in Ashland, Virginia and never released. "That's What I Believe" originally appeared on "Time Goes Rushing By" (Floor Creak)," my first CD, and was sung by Kathie Thomas. "Maybe It's A Miracle" is from "Ruth's Song," a theatrical project that has yet to find a theater.

Kathie sangs all the songs on "Time Goes Rushing By," several of which are on this recording. I met her at the Graves Mountain Bluegrass Festival. She was singing in the shade of a tree; her voice was unique and I soon wrote the songs, which were recorded by Joe "Joebass" DeJarnette. Joe, a highly regarded Old Time player, would later play with the Wiyos, touring with Bob Dylan and Willie Nelson, before opening his own studio in Virginia.

Discerning listeners will note that several of these songs include the hallmarks of first recordings: wandering timing, choppy guitar playing, and dropped notes. These are mainly the work of Dave, who recorded much of the record while lying on his back on a sofa. Joe was unable to fix everything, though he fixed a great deal.

We were also joined on the recording by Kathie's daughter, Mik, who sang harmony on "From The First Time." She was 14 years old at the time. Mik died in 2023. This recording is dedicated to her memory.
